the Author
Fred
Montague earned a Ph.D. in vertebrate ecology from Purdue University in
1975 and taught wildlife ecology and environmental science courses
there until 1993 when he accepted a position as Professor (Lecturer) in
the Department of Biology at the University of Utah.
For
more than 35 years, Fred and his wife Patricia, both in Indiana and in
Utah, have homesteaded, adapting various methods of food production,
energy use, building design, permaculture practice, and conservation
land management to provide for their personal needs (and for other
organisms).
At
the University of Utah, he currently teaches Introduction to
Environmental Science, Global Environmental Issues, Principles of
Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, Literature of Ecology, and
Organic Gardening. He is recognized for his passionate, practical, and
engaging approach to teaching, and he is the recipient of numerous
teaching awards, including the University of Utah Distinguished
Teaching Award.
Several
of his courses are included in the University's Service-Learning
curriculum. Students in the Organic Gardening class have established
and maintained community gardens on campus and at several Salt Lake
City elementary schools.
Fred
is also a wildlife artist and the creator of artist's books, some of
which he prints on a 1913 letterpress and binds by hand. Browse through
this website for more information on these activities.
